Day 243: Why do we have bad workouts?

Hello and Happy Labor Day weekend!

I cannot believe it is already Sunday! Yesterday flew by too quickly but for good reason. My mom and I went shopping all afternoon. From 3-9pm! It was insane. I’ll get to the nitty gritty details later because first we need to get to Friday’s photo of the day!

(It’s hard to believe that I’ve been doing this 365 project for 243 days! This project has surpassed all my expectations and is now just a part of my everyday life. Exactly how it should be!)

Friday

Friday I worked at the house all day, puttering outside for a few minutes a time to absorb some good sunshine. The weather here is insanely hot and humid and it’s impossible to stay out for too long.

But I did stay out long enough to capture these flowers.

So pretty! My mom is in full gardening mode, planting flowers and herbs in pots on the patio. Hopefully they will survive this humidity.

Daily Workout

After work I went to the gym for my third strength session of Best Body Bootcamp. Still a week behind and still loving the program! However, my energy was way low and it was a struggle to complete this circuit workout. Plus I was in the worst mood. Even while working out! That usually never happens to me. Once endorphins kick in I get happy. But this time there were people in my way, getting in my space, and it pissed me off. Sometimes I just want to focus, workout, and get out of there. I don’t need guys ogling me from the seated bicep curl (p.s. grab a dumbbell!!!)

Yeah, obviously not a good workout.

I want to figure why my energy was so low. Here are some potential reasons:

A. My body needs rest. This seems unlikely since I took a rest day just the day before and on Monday too.

B. My body needs more pre-workout fuel. After learning about the principles of Ayurveda at IIN, I am trying to eat 3 bigger meals a day with maybe one snack if I need it in the afternoon. This day I worked out at 5:30PM and hadn’t eaten since 1:30PM.

C. I lost strength while on vacation. While we were in North Carolina a couple weeks ago, I only hiked and did not strength train. However, last week I completed my workouts just fine without feeling weak.

Right now I am leaning towards B. Need more pre-workout fuel. While I enjoy 3 square meals a day, I think I definitely need to put some fuel in the tank before a difficult workout. For my next few workouts I will give this a try and see if it helps my energy levels.

Do you ever have a bad workout?

Sometimes it just happens. It is ok! You can’t have a great workout without some bad workouts thrown into the mix. What’s important is that you don’t just shrug it off. Use it as a learning experience! I am constantly trying to figure out what is best for my body. If I had a bad day I try to recognize the cause and address it like above. Why? So I don’t make the same mistake twice.
